Blood Lines

With these works, Fakatselis continues to explore personal themes; integrating techniques and inspiration from the history of illumination and iconography, while also introducing new mediums and three-dimensional work. The original catalyst for this studio practice was born out of her battle with blood cancer in 2017, which had a metamorphosis effect on the course of her life. Out of this came Fakatselis’ preoccupation with circulatory systems, blood, the role of prayer and miracles in daily life and the desire to delve deeper into identity. Previously focused on the representation of the Plumeria tree fractal as a metaphor for our circulatory system, and themes of symbolism, mythology and iconography, Eva has now entered into the arterial system, exploring this in a more abstract and intuitive way.

In September of 2023, the artist’s father unexpectedly underwent open heart surgery, and she began work on a series of sewn heart organ paintings, meant as votive prayers for the success of his operation. In Greek myth, textile metaphors are often used to convey intangible destiny, and Fakatselis created these meditative handiworks of deep spiritual practice in a time of need. Continuing on this path of material investigation, she also began to experiment with Japanese rice paper and ink after exploring bookmaking. The way that the translucent paper absorbs ink is reminiscent of blood soaking into a bandage or gauze, and the surface quality of the paper echoes the delicacy of skin. Eva has begun to produce a series of red ink splatter paintings based on red blood cells (RBC) and has also led to a further exploration of the subject matter in resin, ink and yarn sculptures. These works share affinities with her tree fractals and previous work that speaks to the transmutation of blood into other significations.
