Fire

2024—2025
Fire, symbol of destruction and rebirth, is a mesmerizing and deeply spiritual subject that I am exploring across diverse mediums and scales. Simultaneously an allegory for transformation and a rich subject for the abstract and gestural exploration of light and color, fire acts as both a catalyst and a medium for creation – an altarpiece to duality and the primal.

With this body of work, I evoke the sensorial experience of fire - the dissolution of form in color - and the implied cycle of transformation. Large gestural paintings immerse the viewer with fiery colors, sulfuric yellows and smokey purples and blues. Juxtaposed with a working set titled the Pluto Series, sacred votive sculptures of resin, wood, ash, ink and iron, I invoke the intimate experience of confronting the fire remnants face-to-face, bringing to mind a range of associations and symbolic of ancient rites, mysteries and the life-affirming nature of meeting death. Charred wood, ash and coal collected over the past year in Guanacaste from forest fires, home hearths and bonfires.

Much like my explorations of blood and the heart, this work reflects a deeply personal process. I am working through confronting cycles of change, faith in letting go and acceptance of the new. My fixation with catalysts for change and transformation has roots in my battle with lymphoma in 2018, which resulted in a form of alchemical death and resurrection. Seven years later, I find myself yet again being called to change how I relate to my world and my idea of self, with my studio practice offering a conduit through which to process and confront this shift.

By painting fire and memorializing burnt and charred relics I work to overcome and normalize the fear and discomfort, remembering that this is part of the process, it never stops and it’s the only path forward.

A convergence of personal narrative with nature and spirituality, my work continues to draw inspiration and meaning from the tapestry of collective iconographies and mythologies, particularly mystical-alchemical language, classical Greek mythology, and Christological iconography in concert with the rich natural world that surrounds me in Costa Rica.

How do we accept the inevitability of change - its grandness and its ordinariness - the inescapable cycles of symbolic death and rebirth we undergo throughout our lifetimes. How can we embrace them, have faith despite the fear and allow ourselves to rise from the proverbial ashes—transformed time and again?
