A Practical and Magical Field Guide to Cancer

An illustrated guide and journal for cancer patients
In the early fall of 2017, I was diagnosed with stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In the wake of this experience, as an opportunity for healing for myself and others, I have created an illustrated guide and journal that gives practical guidance and shares paintings and drawings that add color and beauty to what can be a sterile and frightening experience. There is a section addressed to caregivers as well, a blank ruler-lined section for journaling and note-taking, in addition to a pocket and calendar at the back.

This project was generously kick-started by the Artist Residency at the Harmony Hotel in the summer of 2019 in Costa Rica and continues to be supported by benefactors who believe in providing patients and caregivers with art and guidance during their journey navigating cancer. All proceeds from book sales will go back into supporting the project by funding reprints for donation as well as initiatives like translating and printing a Spanish version of the book.

If you are unable to afford the cost of this book, or would like to request a quantity be donated to your facility, please contact us at studio@evafakatselis.com

Help to make this self-published book available to people recently diagnosed with cancer, and their caregivers.

This is a non-for profit initiative, with self-published copies to be distributed for donation and for sale. Profits from sales will go back into printing more copies in the future and will support additional efforts including translating the book into Spanish as well as the administrative needs around distribution and future revisions.

To date, 500 copies of the book have been donated as a gift to patients and caregivers to USC Norris Cancer Center in Los Angeles, the Meyer Cancer Center at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and The Wellness House in Illinois. Our goal is to make this book as widely available as possible to patients and their community as a donated gift at cancer hospitals, oncology departments, cancer foundations and non-profit organizations, and patient support and education Centers.

Transforming Illness into Art

A creative collaboration with filmmaker Matthew Chenet
During the early winter and spring of 2020, I became friends with Matthew Chenet, filmmaker and storyteller, while setting up my studio in Nosara. We quickly realized the synchronicity of our creative projects—stories about transforming trauma, loss and illness into hope, adventure and beauty.  In the time of COVID, these themes felt more relevant than ever and we decided a collaboration would inspire us both and maybe others as well. This video is the culmination of several days of filming spread over two months and tracks my journey to create the illustrated cancer field guide.
