Re-Imagining Self after Cancer

2020—2021
In the aftermath of Fakatselis’ recovery from cancer, the artist turned to her studio practice to engage various modes of self-exploration. Her portraiture tackles the cyclical themes of personal growth—to witness, confront and transform, again and again. Whether caught in the sinewy limbs of a dense forest or floating in an oceanic swath of blue, the artist’s face, body and organs appear in her work to register that struggle of journeying through and between states of being. It is in this series that the artist began to expand on her personal symbology, intertwining natural motifs with self-portraiture and finding visual expression for the re-imagining of herself and her world.
